"Way Down Upon the Suwannee River " is what you will see on a sign on I-75 when you cross the river in North Florida. If you want to see it close up then get a motel in Live Oak near the Suwannee River State Park, which has a variety of activities including horseback riding, canoeing and music festivals throughout the year. Many think of North Florida as the REAL Florida. From its North Beaches in Fernandine, Jacksonville and St. Augustine to its Gulf Beaches of Panama City, Fort Walton and Pensacola. There are plenty of Beach front motels to choose from. Don't wait too long, the motels and hotels in these areas fill up fast. North Florida is also home of some of the most beautiful clear springs. A bunch of us from Valdosta would drive down to Ichetuchknee Springs near Lake City every summer before it was a state park. At the time it was just an old rope swing and clear, cold water. Do yourself and the kids a favor, (before you get to the hectic florida) book a motel room in Lake City, get directions to Ichetuchknee and float down the Ichetuchknee. The water is so clear you can see the bottom and now that its a state park you don't have to walk 50 miles(it seemed like it)through the woods dragging an inner tube to get back to your car. They now have a shuttle service. One more thing and then you can search for the perfect motel or hotel - Antiquing. Some of the best Antiquing anywhere can be found in North Florida. Starting just south of Gainesville in Micanopy and heading north to Alaucha and ending up north of Tallahassee in Havana. Pick a motel room in any of the major towns and spread out from there.
